Ear mites are common in cats, but extremely rate in dogs.  It is more likely that your dog has otitis, an ear infection.  Otitis may be caused by various kinds of bacteria and yeast.  It is also possible that your dog has foreign material in the ears, such as grass seeds.  When your dog has any ear problems, such as head shaking, pawing or scratching at the ears, tilting the head, or redness, swelling or discharge from the ears, it is always best to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam.  Your veterinarian will examine the ears, determine the source of the problem, remove grass seeds from the ears if needed, or prescribe medication for whatever type of infection is present.
