Chick-fil-A and the gay marriage debate
By Neal Larson
Sitting in Chick-fil-A Wednesday afternoon, I was appalled at all the hate-mongering, gay-bashing, bigoted soccer moms, disabled people and senior citizens stuffing their faces full of chicken. I overheard one mom say to her little boy, “Put on your shoes, son.” You might think that’s no big deal until you realize it sounds a whole lot like “I hate Liberace and Elton John.” Another customer, an elderly gentleman, told a diligent and helpful worker, “Thanks for taking my tray.” We all know what he meant: “I don’t like you if you’re gay.” But who knows, that may have just been me.
The militant gay movement’s response is a kiss-in. How ingenious! Nothing like a same-gender make-out session to win people over. I know that, for me, seeing two dudes tongue wrestling in front of me and my kids gives me an insatiable urge to call my congressman demanding legalization of gay marriage.
In truth, the masses of people flocking to Chick-fil-A showing their support for traditional marriage and freedom of expression were a powerful indication to me that traditional values are not dead. As I looked around the crowded restaurant, people were smiling and laughing. I saw America in their faces, and an almost relieved sense that there are others – many others – who believed as they did and were thrilled to have a great way of expressing it.
A very loud but very small minority of liberal progressives have for years been bullying us into believing that each of us are completely alone. They try to force us to choose between our belief in timeless divine principles, and the world’s fluctuating definitions of right and wrong. They work to make us believe that the only appropriate response to promoting marriage only between one man and one woman is a deep sense of social guilt. Permissiveness is their doctrine, and the dilution of definitions is their modus operandi. They work to untether us from our deeply-held religious beliefs so they’ll have the power to mold and control us. Candidly, their voices have been too loud in my heart and mind. I sense perhaps they have been in yours, too. And I’m fed up with it.
We conservatives must stop caring what the progressive world thinks of us and recognize what is right and wrong stands independent from public opinion. Despite the left’s persistent efforts to convince themselves and others, we do not make our own reality. We are not the authors of right and wrong. If good and bad, right and wrong, light and darkness are determined by the whims of our times, and there is no higher power outlining eternal truth, then we are truly lost unanchored on a dark sea with no boundaries, no shorelines, no lighthouses to look to, and we will ever be adrift in an anarchy where cultural dominance creates the illusion of right and wrong. I refuse to exist in such a world.
And the one thing the militant proponents of gay marriage refuse to acknowledge is that they demand we traditionalists abandon our deeply held religious beliefs and discard them as if they were simply a mistaken notion or a superficial whim. Many, with enough pressure, could be convinced that two plus two equals five. For those who know that five is not the right anwer – that marriage is an ancient institution ordained for man and wife, and more importantly for mom and dad – cease listening to those who would pry you from that knowledge. Despite the din of their loud voices, Chick-fil-A proved that you, my friend, are not alone.

Thayne,
Good one, sir.
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/chick-fil-a-protests–have-they-gone-too-far-.html
Even made it over the pond. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2183234/Chick-fil-A-CFO-Adam-Smith-fired-verbally-abusing-employee-gay-rights-protest-Same-Sex-Kiss-Day.html
Blogs are running about 95% against him. Scroll down to read a few. A few are, well, crudities.
Wednesday the place here was beyond crowded all day long. Went by today, no sign of the “it sucks” protest that I could tell. This one didn’t go over well for the “faux happy” people did it?
Your lack of support for our dear senator Larry Craig is pitiful, Neal. I’ll bet that he is not in the crowd eating chicken today.
Wonderful, we’ll all be soon eating at our favorite liberal or conservative restaurants. It leaves a greasy taste in my mouth.
IMO, corporations should stay out of politics.
I feel ashamed that I brought up Republican conservative Larry Craig in my reply to Neal’s sarcastic editorial today.
I had just read about his defense of spending $217,000 in campaign funds based on the idea that his activities in the bathroom constituted “official business” and should not have to pay this out of his pocketbook.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/08/03/larry-craig-fights-fec-claims-saying-infamous-airport-incident-occurred-on/
I don’t think he even likes chicken from that fast feud place anyway.
“They work to untether us from our deeply-held religious beliefs so they’ll have the power to mold and control us.”
Now that, Neal is a classic line. I can see no greater irony (as I look out from those stormy seas, nay without so much as a lighthouse!)
Neal, in honor of your insightful conservative columns & Republican Conservative Larry Craig (who used to write in your column space here– Why not invite Larry to lunch at Chick-Fil-a with us. I will pay the bill if I can be there to take a few photos.
I’m sure that I could sell the photos for more than the price of lunch.
Max -
It’s worth noting that this episode has no connection to “corporations being involved in politics”. The guy was expressing his personal opinion. It was the libs that tried to involve corporations, because the guy happened to own a prominent business.
Max,
C.R. Stucki is correct, sir. He was supporting traditional marriage, not the other kind. And yes, he happens to own that business. But gays never own businesses, do they? Ben & Jerrys comes to mind for a start.

This was billed as the greatest protest since Occupy Wall Street. Thousands of scantily clad gay men and lesbians said they’d lock lips in a coast-to-coast red-hot make-out session.
They were to blast anti-gay-marriage comments made by Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy. But gays preferred staying home to watch “The Real Housewives of New Jersey.”
Great publicity for Chick-Fil-A though, keep it up. Blogs look to be running about 95% against the gays at present. Bad omen?
Boy, Neal, you really don’t get it, do you? Your religious beliefs and values are not under fire. No one is trying to design bills that will prevent you from going to church, singing your hymns, and having a temple marriage. No one is legislating to make it so the marriage to your wife is illegal, invalid, or inferior. All of those things are intact and protected. No one is legislating so that you can’t voice your opinion (no matter how laced with hate it is) — the first amendment will protect you. It will also protect me when I say you are bigoted. But, this is not about you. This is about all people being able to love who they want and have it legally recognized. This is about *not* marginalizing a segment of our population. This is America. Our values are equality and religious freedom. “Right and wrong” applied morality differs across religions. The constitution does not, and should not, conform to any one set of religious beliefs on dictating what is morally right and wrong. If you want that, go to the Middle East. And by the way, many of those who participated in the kiss-in were families with smiling faces– just like the ones you describe. They have children. They love and laugh. And they gave each other a loving peck on the lips (not the vile tongue kiss you describe for effect). The only difference is the parents were of the same sex. Why get so uptight about displays of love and affection?
And by the way, the majority of Chick-fil-a stores are set up in mostly conservative states. Are we surprised that they get support from conservative customers?
And buying from Ben & Jerry’s automatically makes you a liberal, have to remember that?
Hell, even liberal Austin has a bunch of them and they saw the same thing we saw in other places.
Nope, the gays laid an egg, a big one. Went over like a lead balloon type of thing.
Oh, parents of the same sex can’t have children the “normal” way. They’re bought and paid for or adopted. Hetro is still the way to go to get a child. And yes, some hetros make terrible parents, just like others.
Two guys/gals kissing just doesn’t come across as a display of you know what. It comes across exactly the opposite. Real guys don’t kiss each other. The smart ones never bring it out in public. They know better.
When Obama comes out on the side of gay marriage, then that’s the government dictating. He should stay out of the fray. But if a president comes out against, then he’s racist and bigoted? Can’t have it both ways. Either both can speak or neither can speak. You either can come up with valid reason for your side or going the insult and slur way says you have none. The signs for the gay side at Chick-Fil-A said they had none as they were beyond crude. They laid a rotten egg on this one.
“America, the land of the free”
Side note: This excludes people that the so called Christians decide who to discriminate because a supernatural being told them so.
Here we go again talking about what is right and what is wrong. Values, beliefs, and ideology differs from one religious group to another; and from one person to another. A traditional family might be what is considered right for one, and yet a non traditional family for another.
What we do have to worry about is individuals who believe in absolutes and work to force their beliefs on others through laws or by intimidation. I have read no where, where the gay community has said that the traditional family is wrong; I have however read where others say the nontraditional family is. Let the CEO of Chick-Fil-A express his beliefs about family and let the gay community do the same without reprisal.
When I was younger, my father often said, “It’s no skin off my nose.” If it doesn’t affect me directly then why should I be so uptight.
The institution of marriage being between a man and a woman is a Christian belief. In some ancient cultures it was permissible for a man to take many wives or concubines; and in others a woman could take more than one husband. The ancient Greek and Roman cultures believed that homosexual activity was okay. Now many Christians are forcing their religious beliefs on other as they did during the inquisition and the crusades, and the others are saying they do not believe it.
What is right and wrong is not the same for everyone; it is how one perceives it from his/her point of view.
Tom,
And the mouse in your pocket said you could? The being in question said certain things were right and other things fell “short of the mark” which is the definition of sin. Go argue with him, he doesn’t blog. I’ll take Him any day over you.
jay hook,
“Let the CEO of Chick-Fil-A express his beliefs about family and let the gay community do the same without reprisal.”
Go check, dude, that’s what he did and look at the reprisals from the gay side? They lost big time down here. Ended up looking like complete fools at best.
The institution of marriage began long before Christian were named as such and is in all cultures world wide throughout history. Believe what you want. Gay marriage is found nowhere in those cultures. It’s come about in the past 3 decades or so and those pushing it say you have to accept it no choice, how tolerant of them? I perceive they have a problem of their own making.
I’m sorry but there are some absolutes. No killing for a start? But then how do you explain away war? Somethings that are wrong will always be wrong. Communism was bad, that’s why it fell, albeit from bad economics but fall it did. Took an estimated 110 million victims with it, but there for awhile they were going to rule the world but didn’t, did they? They were, what the word you don’t want to accept, WRONG?
This world of yours that says everyone can do what they want is ripe for anarchy and worse. Your version of nirvana has a few problems that says it will never work.
DR,
You don’t seem to get it. both groups should be allowed to express their beliefs without reprisal. The CEO of Chick-Fil-A and the gay individual both without reprisal.
Study you history and the Bible. How many wives did King David have? How many wives and concubines did Abraham have? How many wives did many of the Mormon pioneers have before it was determined not a religious practice? When resources are plentiful many cultures practice polygamy. When resources are scarce some cultures allow the female to take more than one husband. Polyandry was practiced by ancient Tibetan, Nigerian, Polynesian, Kenyan, Tanzanian, and Celtic culture, just to name a few.
Now you are explaining what is right and wrong from your perspective and therefore, they will always be wrong. Would you kill someone to save your life or the lives of those you love? Thou shalt not kill, but in the bible how many times did God command his people to kill? “Is it better than one man should perish than an entire nation dwindle in unbelief?”
Communism fell, not because it was bad, but because Russia could not economically support the war with Afghanistan. This is where the US has been for the last 10 years with a similar outcome.
Just to make myself clear! I never said that people could do what ever they wanted. As long as their actions do not infringe on my freedom of choice or someone else, then let them do as their heart commands. Another quote my father used, “Your freedom of choice ends where my nose begins.”
Mr. Jay Hook: Some of the blogs on here are not worth responding to, but this one I will. In your last post, you state that DR just doesn’t get it, and that both of those ‘entities’ have a right to express their beliefs without reprisal. I couldn’t agree with you more. However, if you read the post just above yours, from DR, you should note that he states that when Chick-fil-A made their comment, look at the reprisals from the gay side. So I believe he did get it.
See – what generally happens too much on these blogs is that only certain persons are allowed to express their beliefs, and if anyone has the unmitigated gaul to disagree, all of a sudden they become ‘republican/mormon,tea-party/racists’ And that is just the cleaner names. And God forbid that you criticize anything about Obama, because then you are a definite ‘racist’, and hate him because he is ‘black’. (BTW – that is another thing they don’t get – he is also ‘white’! Go figure!)
I wouldn’t mind being called a republican if I was one. But I’m not; I wouldn’t mind being called a Mormon, if I was one. But I’m not; I wouldn’t mind being called a member of this so-called Tea Party, if I was one. But I’m not. I wouldn’t even mind being called a racist, if I was one. But I’m not!
You see – these troll/clones that keep coming up with all these names for the ones that disagree with them are the real ‘racists’! They hate all republicans, therefore, they are racists against them. They hate all Mormons, therefore they are racists against them. They hate all Tea Party members, therefore, they are racists against them. And they hate all white people, therefore, they are racists against them. But instead of admitting that, they just turn it around and call the rest of us the ‘racists’, which in itself should let you know that they aren’t too smart. If they were, they would certainly know how to differentiate.
And one other little tid-bit! There are a great many ‘straight’ folks that could care less about the ‘gays’, and their life style. What most of them (including me) resent is that some of the gays think we should accept everything they want, including special benefits from Uncle Sam, and set them apart. How, may I ask, if they want to be noted as a completely separate “clan” as it were, how does that make them equal? And yes, I do have some gay friends. Believe it or not, they agree with me.
Skezix, you say the gays are asking you to “accept everything they want, including special benefits from Uncle Sam, and set them apart.” What exactly does that mean? Please describe the special benefits and other things they are asking for to “set them apart”.
Some religions discriminate others don’t. Not sure what religion disgusted reader is associated with, but obviously his religion discriminates. The Jesus Christ I know and worship guides me to understand, respect, and love all of Gods creations.
No Idea: One thing the gays are asking for is ‘special marriage laws’. Granted, there are still a lot of states that don’t recognize ‘gay marriage’. However, there are a lot of states that do. A couple of my gay friends went to one of those states and got married. To them, they are as married as any other couple. A great example of a gay couple would be Ellen DeGenneres(sp). She is gay, married, and makes no bones about it. She also does not flaunt it, march up and down the street, and demand people accept it. She just lives her life as we all do, treats everyone the same, and expects no less. And – she is one of the most popular celebrities around. (I even watch and enjoy her show when I get the chance). Maybe all gays should pattern their lives after her, and they might get the respect they demand. Just a thought.
Another thing some gays are asking for is recognition to teach school children that it is okay for people to be gay, and therefore accepted. One reason that is not a good idea, is that most young school children are confused enough just trying to learn most school curriculums. In a lot of cases, they come from a family that has a ‘mother and father’, therefore not quite understanding what that means. When they go home and ask their parents, depending on their parent’s take on the matter, they most likely get even more confused. It is generally a good idea to allow families to teach their children about the different lifestyles of different people, and keep it out of the schools.
There are many other demands that come from some ‘gays’, but not all of them. (You can do your own research.) In short, they just expect everyone to accept their lifestyle, and most religions won’t. So therefore, they feel repressed.
I have no problem with gays, as long as they allow me to accept them as ‘just people’. When they start demanding that I treat them special because of who they are, I won’t do it. They want equality, fine! Then act the part.
I have no problem with gays…BS. In a nut shell Shezix believes that his friends are second class citizens. Put your religious beliefs and homofobia aside and explain to us why all law abiding citizens of the USA should not be granted the same rights as anyone else. If you truly like your gay friends why don’t you think they can have the same rights as you and have a marriage certificate or hold hands while walking in a parade. There are millions of gay people in this world and their always have been, get over it. Not everyone in this world is fits your perfect mold. Your digging a hole you wont be able to climb out of. Instead of coming on here and spewing your hate, you should of stayed in your own closet.
PS Ellen DeGeneres is a huge gay rights activist.
Again Skezix, I ask you… what “SPECIAL RIGHTS” are gays asking for? If you do not have an answer to the question, just say so. Don’t go off on some tangent about how gay people should model their life after Ellen because you happen to like and accept her. Answer the question… What “SPECIAL RIGHTS”?
…and Shezix wonders why people have labeled him a bigot.
No idea,
He answered you, obviously you don’t recognize answers if one bit you.
And Tom wonders why we go after him time and again too. New definition of bigot, same as racist, disagreeing with a liberal minded person. Which justifies them acting like complete dorks and arses in return.
The RIGHT TO BE MARRIED when it’s not marriage that has been defined for thousands of years. Now if they want a legal civil union then we have something to talk about, not until. Where do we draw the line, man & pet, man/boy, there are a bunch waiting in the wings expectantly to see how far this can be pushed or shoved.
When we have to accept their way, period, no choice. If Chik Fil A says they believe in traditional marriage and said nothing about the gays version then the gays by THEIR OWN REASONING have to accept that they have a right to their own opinion, but no, crude signs, crude social behavior is foisted on the dining public. They never had that RIGHT and that right is defining them not in a good way.
Went by 3 Chik Fil A’s today, I doubt I could have gotten in they had so much business.
Gays ended up looking like they laid a rotten egg on this one.
I don’t discriminate, I make valid judgements, bug difference. If somebody isn’t worth following, I don’t follow them. Let them fail on their own.
Gee big surprise an old white male right wing wacko tea partying mormon bigot texan comes riding in on his hand cart to save Shezix. Hanging out with the wrong crowd once again aren’t you. Let’s wait 6 months to see how tastes like hates value is doing. Why don’t you like gay people? Is it because God told you not to like them or do you just feel superior?
NO IDEA: Special marriage laws – for a start. Get a clue. I do not think of gays, or any one else as ‘second class citizens’! If, of course, they are citizens. I never said all ‘gays’ should model themselves after Ellen Degenneres, just develop her attitude. Yes, she is an advocate for gay rights. But not to the extreme that she expects the world to change every existing church and government laws to accommodate the gays. If most religions believe in the sanctity of a ‘man and a woman marriage’, then that is the right of the religion. There have actually been some religions that have changed their policy to accommodate gay marriage. But that doesn’t seem to be enough. Some gays want ALL of the religions to do that. That is demanding more, and they do not have the right to demand that. That is tantamount to non-believers demanding that all religions cease and desist their beliefs.
Like DR noted, there are civil ceremonies. If they are not happy with that, then let them go to one of the religions that will accommodate them in a church ceremony. But they do not have the right to ‘demand’ that any religion, or any one else do as they bid. Even non-gays don’t have the right to ‘demand’ anything that goes against the beliefs and practices of any religion.
Also – FYI – I have seen many times that gays have walked in parades holding hands, like everyone else. I never thought about it one way or the other. I, personally, could care less. As for explaining anything to you, I cant perform miracles.
jay hook,
How many wives did David have? Per my reading 8 wives and ten concubines and he was a lousy husband even then. Not a single one was a guy. What does polygamy (which was legal) have to do with gay marriage. Do gays want multiple wives also? Marriage, whether the government wants to admit it or not is a religious practice of ALL societies. Where in the constitution does it given them the right to say anything about it? I know, the “common good” argument that goes nowhere and fast?
May I recommend Dr. Giers religion as being more accepting. Had a gay and a lesbian married down here a number of years ago, that was well quaint to say the least and yes, memebers of ‘that’ religion.
Tom,
I don’t hate them, but for you I reserve a special place in hell and will make life on here just that for you. I don’t back down, so if you want to continue this waste of time, it’s your choice. You could, as a last resort come up with logical replies instead of snotty replies.
Don’t Mess with Texans, even the garbage cans down here know that. If in 6 months americans choose to go the way you say they are, then they will have to pay the consequences of that choice and it’s going to be beyond dumb, stupid and ugly. This country may not survive intact, you guarantee it.
Disgusted Reader does not like gays because when he was younger he went to a sock hop, drank some spiked punch, and woke up with a sore rear and a nickel in his pocket. True story.
Ron Walker: The only way you could know if that were a true story is if you perpetrated the deed. So did you? Does that mean you are gay? And, of course, this DR wasn’t known as Disgusted Reader in his younger days. So who did you do that to? Shame on you!
I was right, I didn’t think a bigot would answer my simple questions.
Skezix, you truly must be an idiot. Do you seriously think that gays are trying to make CHURCHES perform weddings for them? Are you really that dense? The gay marriage issue involves marriages performed by the GOVERNMENT, not any CHURCH. Go read up on the issue and come back when you can talk about it without sounding like a retard.
Well gee whiz! If you are so smart, and think you know all this, then why are you asking me? I only know what research tells me. So why don’t you go talk to the researchers, call them idiots and retards, and leave me alone. You might also talk to some of those congregation members that quit their churches because of it. (According to research, which of course, you never bother with.)
Like I said. I can’t perform miracles!
So, according to the RESEARCH that you have done and like to hang your hat on… what SPECIAL RIGHTS/BENEFITS are gays asking for? oh…why bother… you really are an idiot.
Ron Walker,
Two quarters, you knew that. Going price, strange you should know that. That and a dab of vaseline, can’t forget that.
I don’t dislike gays with the notable exception of the “in your face” ones that nobody likes. Know more than my fair share of them, they all live in South Austin.
Tom,
What are you babbling about? Answer your own dumb questions, my answers stays the same, you won’t admit it. Last I heard you qualify as one of the “happy” children yourself.
No idea,
They want church weddings down here, you read up. Government performs civil weddings, the churches do church weddings, DUH. If they don’t want church weddings then what is all they yelling and farting about? Go downtown, declare a civil union and pay the “poll tax” required. No ceremony necessary.
Chik-Fil-A is doing a landslide business, they’re thinking of supporting traditional marriage again. Cheap advertising.
Evidently there are 2 idiotic retards swirling around in this toilet bowl. Looks like one of them’s from Texas.
Disgusted says “They want church weddings down here”
I say prove it.
What? Again?? What is your problem no idea? Looks to me like you picked a great ‘name’ this time, as you seem to have ‘no idea’. It has become obvious, that all you want to do is argue and call people names. You really need to quit drinking out of that toilet bowl, and wallowing around in the pig slop. What you have proven is you are one of the troll/clones, and you do know how to call people names. Other than that, you know nothing.
So, Skezix, that is your answer? You can’t provide one lick of evidence showing any SPECIAL RIGHTS OR BENEFITS that are being requested? Just what I thought and you have proven. You like to talk a lot, but when it comes down to it, you just blat worthless rhetoric and inflammatory hot air.
I rest my case!
As do I sir. They’re dense beyond belief.
Try the Episcopalians, Lutherans and Unitarians for a start. Google it if you don’t believe us. Start here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blessing_of_same-sex_unions_in_Christian_churches.
Nice try PDF’s weren’t even available for public use until 2001. Where are Mitt Romney’s tax returns. He has not even released a PDF copy of them. Would you really vote for a guy who lies about his taxes?
Prove he lies. You have no proof he lies, other than your made up snotty remark. I’m voting against Obama the liar. Where are his records that he refuses to release? And better yet, what is he hiding? Only fair. This about one side only having to release things is crap. Indeed what has Obama been hiding for how many years now? But he gets a pass in your world? Not in mine.
It’s the economy stupid, nobody gives squat about more than 2 years of anyone’s tax returns. Found anything in the two years he released? Didn’t think so? Made Obama and Biden look like cheap skates, didn’t they? 1% and 1.5% charitable giving say liberals are only charitable with other peoples money.
Obama has given up pushing the issue but you still want to run with it? Heard the latest, Romneyhood, whatever that is, take from the poor who have nothing and given nothing to the rich. Ugly election year, this year.
Run on your record Obama, even if you don’t have one. Not happening is it?

“Sitting in Chick-fil-A Wednesday afternoon, I was appalled at all the hate-mongering, gay-bashing, bigoted soccer moms, disabled people and senior citizens stuffing their faces full of chicken.”
Me too. Me too.
A virtually unknown presidential candidate in Virginia could derail Mitt Romney’s bid for president. But how rare is it for a third-party candidate to influence a race for president?
Currently, Virgil Goode, a candidate running in Virginia, has about 9 percent of the projected vote in the upcoming November election, according to polling data.
With Mitt Romney needing Virginia—especially if President Barack Obama can take Ohio or Florida—Goode could become the little-known spoiler in the national election.
The former congressman has a strong enough following in rural Virginia to take votes away from Romney, and Goode has no plans to end his low-budget campaign.
Speaking with a TV station in Lynchburg, Goode said he wanted to take votes away from both candidates. He hopes to be added to a ballot in late August, as a Constitution Party candidate.
